The temperature-dependent phenology and brood development of Ips typographus (L.) (Coleoptera, Curculionidae) can be simulated by means of the model PHENIPS (Baier&al., 2007). PHENIPS air temperature and solar radiation as basic data input for modelling of the beetles' phenology and seasonal development. In Saxony, the applicability of the model was tested using detailed observations of brood development of I. typographus in trap trees, recordings of phloem temperatures and data from monitoring of the swarming activity by means of pheromone traps. Based on weather recordings of several forest meteorological stations in Saxony, an application for modelling and visualisation of the development of I. typographus by automatically updated diagrams on the internet was established. Since April 2010, daily weather recordings and forecasts from selected agrometeorological stations, provided by the DWD (Deutscher Wetterdienst), are additionally used for daily updated modelling of the beetles' development. Furthermore, the station-based modelling results in Saxony are regionalised using specific biogeoclimatic regions for spatial-temporal visualisation of modelling results on the internet. The developed tools for real-time monitoring of the development of I. typographus in the field can be used as an early warning system and provide essential information for the specific users concerning priority decisions, scheduling and timely realization of direct control and preventive measures.
